Documentary: Chickenhawk

Description:

Strange People (1994) Directed by Adi Sideman. A controversial, well made documentary that features members of the controversial group N.A.M.B.L.A. (The North American Man/Boy Love Association). They are surprisingly frank and freely discuss their organization and their attraction to boys. It's fascinating to hear these guys explain their attractions and in one case see a nothing exchange between one of these guys and a group of teens that he later interprets in the most bizarre skewed way, reading subtext that just wasn't there in any way. A real window into the thought processes of these guys. An oddity that for many may be distasteful but a well made interesting documentary into this underground organization. Good Picture and Sound from a loong out of print pre-record source. Sound/Picture 8/10

(2003) Directed by Harmony Korine /Steve Smith. Remember when Blaine had himself locked in a plexiglass room suspended high in the air near Tower bridge in London for 44 days with nothing to consume but water? Well, this cool documentary co-directed by Harmony Korine documents the whole event including the lowering of the half-dead Blaine at the end of the ordeal. This 2 Dvd-r set also includes magic and additional features. A cool addition to any collection. Documentary: D.O.A.

Description:
Directed by Lech Kowalski 1980. A brash, captivating documentary of punk music on and off stage. Focus is on the first U.S. tour 1978 of the Sex Pistols. Other groups shown are Dead Boys, Generation X with Billy Idol, Rich Kids, X-Ray Specs, Sham 69, with additional music from The Clash, Iggy Pop and Augustus Pablo. Includes famous interview of Sid and Nancy in bed. A good non-obtrusive film that lets music speak foritself albeit somewhat out of sync. It was a pleasure to see and hear COMPLETE songs as so many documentaries show perhaps a minute of a song and go back to commentary, etc. Covers the Sex Pistols tour rather well, both on stage and crowd reaction. About 10 songs in allfrom the early '78 tour. Sid and Nancy are there for real and are anything but the shapely, stylish Chloe Webb and Gary Oldman from "Sid and Nancy" from Alex Cox. Rather wrenchingto sit through it all. A tragic highlight was suffering through working-class yob Terry Sylvestre and his 'Terry and the Idiots' outfit that bomb heavily at the local pub.

Documentary: Hells Angels Forever

Description:

1983 Directed by Richard Chase, Leon Gast. The true story of an American Phenomenon. The highlight of this movie for me was an interview w/ Jerry Garcia. The interviewer asks Garcia if he was afraid of the Angels, and Garcia replies that he was. The interviewer then asks Garcia what the attraction was - and Garcia replies with a Smile - "They're really good in all the violent spaces." It's interesting to note that Garcia personally put up a large portion of the money to help make this movie happen. I had read Hunter Thompson's excellent book on the Hells Angels prior to watching this movie, which I think may have filled in some blank spots. It's not a well-made film, but it is Well Done. If you've ever been curious about what Real Hell's Angels were like - this is a good way to start finding out without risking much.

Documentary: Renaldo and Clara

Description:
Directed by Bob Dylan. Writing credits Bob Dylan, Sam Shepard. 1978
This epic is a mass amalgamation of three separate film-types that is, contrary to popular opinion, coherent and a unified whole. Bob Dylan is shown in concert, often masked, during the Rolling Thunder Revue. The film also features documentary footage, including Ruben "Hurricane" Carter's struggle against the forces that have imprisoned him. The third element is fictional "role-playing" footage with Bob Dylan in the guise of guitar-strumming Renaldo and his wife Sara as his companion Clara. Ronnie Hawkins takes on the role of Bob Dylan in these sequences. The film includes footage of a visit to the grave of Jack Kerouac, an Allen Ginsberg poetry reading and various friends and acquaintances, namely David Blue playing pinball by a swimming pool, discussing experiences on the road.

Documentary: Rolling Stones, Cocksucker Blues

Description:

(1972) Directed by Robert Frank. Probably the best documentary ever made to show what the real rock & roll lifestyle is all about. If you wanna see Keith, Mick and the rest of the cast & crew totally free of any pretense 'COCKSUCKER BLUES' is the ultimate "on the road" rock & roll movie. In fact the Stones themselves sued the makers to prevent its release. It's STILL under a court order that only allows it to be shown once a year and only with director Robert Frank present in person.

But now you can own it and watch again and again. Highest recommendation! Very good Picture and Sound with menu and chapter stops. Sound/Picture 8.5/10
