Horror -Science Fiction: Atolladero
Description:
It's the end of this century. The towns between the major cities have become lawless wastelands. Atolladero is one such stink hole. It's ruthlessly run by the 150 year old "Judge" and his boys. The Judge's right hand man is Madden, a half Indian psychopath (played by legend Iggy Pop). One of the few decent men in town is the local cop Lenny who's just plain tired of the damn town's corruption and perversion. What he wants to do is quit his job, and start a new life in L.A. Think there's a catch? No-one leaves Atolladero alive, not without facing the Judge and his nasty cronies. A cool flick that's a mix between post-apocalyptic down n'dirty Mad Max kind of SF flicks, classic Sergio Leone nihilist coolness, with the attitude of Alex Cox. A recommended 'lost' classic in a beautiful widescreen print: Picture/sound 10/10.

Horror -Science Fiction: Atomik Circus - Le retour de James Bataille
Description:
(2004) Directed by Didier Poiraud & Thierry Poiraud. Just about the weirdest amalgaming of a love story-science fiction-Lovecraft influenced-punk rock movie you'll ever see! The story, you ask? Well.. We're told that the films is going to be a love story, a love story that's interrupted when, during Skotlett's annual Beef Pie festival, aliens that look like over-evolved flies land and cause all kids of carnage. Why? … You guessed it! Mating and opening gates to hell! The effects are really pretty darn good - the Poiraud brothers don’t go all out on the CGI, knowing that sometimes not showing everything leaves us wanting more - gruesome and sometimes hilarious! Even the two main stars are good: Vanessa Paradis and Benoit Poelvoorde . The music, by Little Rabbits, was nominated for best soundtrack in the French equivalent of the Grammys. Horror -Science Fiction: Change of Mind
Description:
Directed by Robert Stevens 1969. Black body--White Brain! A white man's brain is transplanted into a black man's skull. Here lies the conundrum: When and if we do realize the theory of transplanting brains, who survives? - the brain donor or the body donor? Who is the donor and who is the recipient? This movie, however, makes it clear that the brain's owner is the survivor but nevertheless he becomes a changed man, a white man who after experiencing racial discrimination, begins thinking like a black man. The fact that he is a District Attorney does not shield him from racism and surprisingly, even those who knew that he used to be a white man changed their attitude towards him. Made a few years after the anti-racial discrimination laws were passed by the Johnson administration, this film seemed to rub it in onto racists and segregationists. The wonderful jazz music of Duke Ellington helps this movie along. I wish I could hear the soundtrack again.

Horror -Science Fiction: Dämonenbrut
Description:
(2000) (V) Directed by Andreas Bethmann. Increasingly known as Germany's Joe D'Amato, Andreas Bethmann's films mixes plenty of blood, and sex. Andreas Bethmann is at his X-Rated best again in this sex n' fore fest and it's the director's cut to boot! After a bank robbery a couple of gangsters decide to lay low for a while on an island and you guessed it-they picked the wrong island. An island where demonic forces at work! The effects? Low-budget, but are pretty damned effective and what can you say about a movie that contains among its insanities a montage of demons tentacle-raping their victims? Plus, still looking SWEET is Katja Biernet (she of Jess Franco and German sexploitation films) in a starring role. Whooo ha! ADULTS ONLY! A beaut of a print with a great menu. Horror -Science Fiction: The Day of the Triffids
Description:
(1981) (MADE FOR TV) Directed by Ken Hannam. One of my all time favorite SF novels is back in a really good mini series Brit adaption. It's set in England late in the 20th century, following a small group of people as they try to survive in a world where most everyone has been rendered blind by some kind of unexplained phenomenon. This has just about brought about the collapse of civilization. That and the new presence of Plants called Triffids, a previously docile species of mobile carnivorous plant (!) who 'realize' humanity's new weakness and start to develop a taste for these blind, slow moving, meaty morsels, forcing those remaining sighted humans to abandon cities and move to isolated rural areas and islands. Complete mini series on 2 Dvd-rs. Great print menu & chapter stops. Picture/Sound 10/10

Horror -Science Fiction: Evil Aliens
Description:
(2005) Directed by Jake West. If you like your horror gory, crass, low budget, and ass kicking.. guess what? This one's for you! A sexy (really sexy) reporter for trash 'true mysteries' TV show is sent off to follow up on a lead about an alien abduction and pregnancy in the Welsh countryside. Putting together a crew of misfits including the always horney cameraman and boom operator, a REALLY gay actor and a blonde call girl to do the 're-enactment' scenes, and as an 'expert' an alien abduction fetishist geek (obviously modeled after Peter Jackson's character in 'Bad Taste'). Of course the abductee lives in a farmhouse with three insane, impossible to understand, violent prone, hick brothers on an island that gets surrounded by water as the tides come in at night - isolating them. The army of aliens act as cannon fodder for the super gory set pieces that consist of everything from a full sized crucifix to any and all farm machinery you can think of. And of course, being an alien abduction flick there's a crazy alien probe scene in there too! Great letterboxed print in with menu & chapter stops. Picture/Sound 10/10

Horror -Science Fiction: Filmgore
Description:
Directed by Ken Dixon, Kurt Tarvis. 1983 "Filmgore" is another of those horror compilation tapes that turn up in bargain bins and older video stores. As such, it does it's job, but leaves much to be desired. First off, I think Elvira really needed some new material for this. Her jokes are beyond lame for the most part and more an annoyance than anything I ended up fast-forwarding through them. Second, many of the scenes used on the tape are not particularly gory; more suitable clips from more suitable films would've been nice. However, what this compilation DOES have are condensed versions of several notorious gore flicks: "Two Thousand Maniacs", "Blood Feast", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" notorious but not gory, "Driller Killer", and "Snuff". Basically, if you are unable or unwilling to find copies of these films, you get the condensed versions of them here - if you want to see any of them in their entirety, however, be warned that most clips give away the films' endings. Of course, in the case of "Snuff", that is a good thing: you can see the infamous ending without wading through the rest of the film. Several other films are represented here, including the god-awful "Carnival of Blood" which will most likely make you fall asleep even in this edited version and the unintentionally funny "Drive-In Massacre", which features a REALLY funny decapitation and a great ending that must've been hilarious when it was shown in actual drive-ins. So if this material appeals to you, by all means go out and rent "Filmgore". Just don't expect a very polished or well put-together presentation.

Horror -Science Fiction: Glen and Randa
Description:
Directed by Jim McBride. 1971 SF / Drama Teenagers Glen and Randa are members of a tribe that lives in a rural area, several decades after nuclear war has devastated the planet. They know nothing of the outside world, except that Glen has read about and seen pictures of a great city in some old comic books. He and Randa set out to find this city. "Glen and Randa," takes place in an unspecified time after a nuclear holocaust. Free of the apocalyptic battles and black-leather-clad demagogues that would soon come to dominate this genre, this pic starts with, and stays with, the commonplace, such as mining mountains of refuse for usable canned goods. From comic books, Glen has an image of a shining city somewhere "out there." He and the by-now pregnant Randa they're teenagers set out on a journey to find it. Along the way, they find a horse, a house, a companion, an ocean where there ought not to be one, and a boat. No pillars of fire. No Statue of Liberty toppled on the beach. This is a small movie that views the small subject of day-to-day survival from a strictly human viewpoint. The "X" rating is, by today's standards, completely unaccountable.

Horror -Science Fiction: Humanoid
Description:
aka Umanoide, L' (1979) Directed by Aldo Lado. Yeesh! This is a flikkin' oddity! Okay.. ya gotta admit The Humanoid has a pretty kick ass cast. Arthur Kennedy (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA), Barbara Bach (CAVEMAN),Massimo Serato (AUTOPSY), Richard Kiel (007 flicks) And the crew? Enzo G. Castellari, Giannetto De Rossi, Antonio Margheriti, and... Ennio Morricone! Every one of them working seemingly single mindedly half assed. Goofy special effects, dumb-ass dialog, this low-budget Italian/Turkish STAR WARS ripoff contains enough ineptness to give most people a good jaw-dropping, roll around the floor good time. As villains go, the DARTH VADER-like costume the very fey Ivan Rassimov (EATEN ALIVE, ULTIMO MONDO CANNIBAL) is the toughest thing about this guy. How do you like such commanding evil lines like: "so you have come to battle me at last, princely hero!" or "you failed to kill the girl! You are stripped of your command.. for 100 days!" Description:
(1982) Directed by Hal Needham. Yikes! It's the 80's! Chock full of cheese, cheese, cheese... What can you say about it: It's gotta be high on a lot of people's 'guilty pleasures' list. The special effects are alright in a 1982 kinda way but the best part of it is that no-one and I mean no-one took this project too seriously. You want the plot? Ace Hunter (gotta love that name) is the leader of Megaforce, an elite group of American soldiers who travel the world to fight Evil. This time having to take out a third rate dictator. Horror -Science Fiction: Rawhead Rex
Description:
Directed by George Pavlou 1986. He's Pure Evil. Pure Power. Pure Terror. Ireland will never be the same after Rawhead Rex, a particularly nasty demon, is released from his underground prison by an unwitting farmer. The film follows Rex's cross country rampage, while a man struggles to stop it. As far as monsters go, the title creature here takes the cake. He I guess it's a he is representative of what most imagine a typical lumbering monster to look like: huge 8 or 9 feet tall, hairy, big teeth, with a nasty disposition. He seems to exist only to kill human beings, usually *AARRR* growling in the process. However, since this is based on a Clive Barker story, the monster turns out to be what began our notions of what the devil is. In a veiled jab at the modern church, one of the characters is a church rep who immediately switches sides to worship at the altar of this filthy behemoth, who, at one point, urinates on his new subject in appreciation. Ah, that Barker, whatta card. The monster also avoids killing pregnant females, for reasons I can't really remember maybe babies are future food or potential sacrifice? The rest, of course, is typical monster-on-the-loose fare, this time in the Irish countryside. The main lead Dukes, pretty good is a visiting American, however, who very quickly has a personal stake in destroying the murdering beast. In amusing sidelines, we see the natural antagonism towards the visitor from the locals; the coppers scoff at his account of a monster. Oh yes, he is a writer, this American fella. The ending is kind of sappy, and then there's a twist which doesn't really make sense, just for simple shock effect. But, you'll remember that snarling giant for awhile afterward.

Bernard Rose, who directed 'Candyman' and the criminally underrated 'Immortal Beloved' has created a weird flick that is a kind of melding of the contrivances of reality series' mixed with 'The Wicker Man' and Dennis Hopper's 'Last Movie'. It seems that, three decades earlier, a terrible thing happened at the mansion-like home of a famous horror director. While away at some casino or other, a group of Manson family types enter his mansion and murder a bunch of his friends. This trauma results in the same director disappearing from public view. Suddenly the same director is back with a new project: he auditions and brings a group of actors back to the same mansion to participate in a reality-show type of experiment where everyone must be in character 24/7 and everything is filmed. Yup, it's not too long before the line between acting and reality start to blur... Great letterboxed print in with menu & chapter stops. Picture/Sound 10/10 ADULTS ONLY!

Horror -Science Fiction: Starcrash
Description:
Caroline Munro plays the films heroine Stella Star the sexy half of the space pirate duo. Munro tries her best to belt out lines with as much emotion as she can muster. The cliche lines read like something straight out of 1930s afternoon serials. Prince Simon, played by a young David Hasselhoff, comes near the film's end with limited acting. Christopher Plummer does an excellent job as The Emperor.

Description:
(1974) Directed by Paul Maslansky. One of our favorite genres: 70's blaxploitation and horror (Blacula, Scream Blacula Scream, Blackenstein..) . It is a pretty neat little film with some good horror sequences of zombies in graveyards and zombies administering revenge. A cool horror/revenge film about a beauty of a woman who's boyfriend is beaten to death by thugs wanting to buy his business. Looking for payback, she seeks the help of an old voodoo woman (Mrs. Jefferson on the Jeffersons) to help her reach the spirit world, selling her soul in the process, in exchange for an army of Zombies... who proceed to dispatch each individual in some gruesome ways. A cool, must have, zombie flick. Great Picture and Sound from an international dvd source with menu and chapter stops. In English. Sound/Picture 10/10

Horror -Science Fiction: Tales from the Crypt
Description:
Directed by Freddie Francis 1972. Horror DEATH LIVES in the Vault of Horror! Five different people get lost while touring an ancient burial crypt and are confronted by the mysterious hooded crypt keeper Ralph Richardson who tells each individual a story to their impending fates. In the first, "All Through the House," a murderous wife Joan Collins is terrorized by a maniac in a Santa Claus suit on Christmas Eve. In "Relfection of Death," a philanderer Ian Henry has an accident with his mistress and then wanders the Earth unaware that he's dead. In "Poetic Justice," the son of a greedy real estate man Robin Phillips and his father plot to drive an elderly man Peter Cushing out of their neighborhood only to have the man commit suicide on Valentine's Day, and return to get revenge. In "Wish You Were Here," a crooked businessman Richard Greene and his wife buy a Chinese curio that will grant her three wishes, which naturally go wrong. In the last story, "Blind Alleys," a cruel and heartless new director of a home for the blind Nigel Patrick gets the tables turned on him by his long oppressed residents who exact a cruel revenge. Five people are trapped in a crypt and are shown their futures by the evil cryptkeeper. They are given the option of avoiding their fates - by avoiding living out the rest of their lives. Based on the old and rather controversial E.C. Comics of the mid-20th century, this horror anthology is an above average entry in an intriguing and all but dead genre. Here there is a tour group seen roaming through some ancient catacombs with five attendees obstinately staying behind, despite numerous warnings to stick close together. They find themselves severed from the group and wind up in a tomb-like room with creepy Richardson in a monk's robe doling out orders and insights. The quintet is made to sit while each one gets a glimpse into his or her recent life. Thus the five brief stories are presented in order, each one with a morbid, ironic or gory twist to it. Collins looking svelte and attractive is in the first one. She splits her husband's head open as he's benignly reading the newspaper while cheery Christmas music plays on the soundtrack. Hilariously, she kicks him down the steps while "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" drones on. Before she can properly dispose of his body, an escaped mental patient in a Santa suit starts terrorizing her! Then Hendry is shown leaving his wife and children for a younger woman. A fateful experience on the freeway changes his life forever. Next up, snooty Phillips is being driven up the wall by his neighbor - kindly, but eccentric, old man Cushing. Phillips continuously thwarts Cushing until he gives up...but does he? A fourth tale features Greene as a greedy gunrunner who is forced to part with his possessions, but his wife spies an inscription on an old statuette and discovers that she can use it to ask for three wishes. This doesn't work out quite as optimistically as she had hoped. Finally, Patrick is a militant, heartless administrator of a home for the blind. He pushes the male inhabitants there to their limit and winds up paying dearly for his sins. Though no story gets enough time spent on it to really flesh it out to it's greatest potential, most of them are really intriguing and usually very well acted. The spareness of the locations and effects help set a rather desolate and chilly mood. The finest acting is probably provided by Cushing in a very atypical role. The most memorable vignette is the last one which features an unforgettable comeuppance. Fans of British horror and especially of anthologies will rank this pretty highly, but it's interesting enough to lure other viewers as well.

Horror -Science Fiction: These Are The Damned
Description:
While made under the Hammer Films banner, THE DAMNED is not a typical SF picture by any means. Expatriate director Joseph Losey set out to make a social parable more than an SF thriller. He succeeds in showing how society's increasing violence and callousness on the streets could lead to the horrible thought of "breeding" radioactive children in the government in order to survive an inevitable (?) nuclear war. The moral is both, of the time & time-less. Of course, modern audiences may feel that the end of the Cold War makes such a tale outdated and even silly - but are we only fooling ourselves?

Horror -Science Fiction: Underworld
Description:
1985 Also Known As:Transmutations - Directed by George Pavlou A horrible experiment. A criminal empire. One thing in common... Given that this is based on a Clive Barker story, and contains some major acting talent it should be good. It's NOT good, and the blame for that rests squarely with director George Pavlou. It could have been an interesting melding of the crime/horror genre, but takes every wrong turn possible. Larry Lamb is a good actor, but he is so hopelessly miscast here as the hard man reluctantly dragged back into the criminal underworld, that there is a gaping hole at the heart of the film where a central character should be. In fact most of the normally reliable actors here, turn in awful performances. The sets are awful the neon tube underground lab looks like a Gary Numan stage set. The costumes are awful the gangsters dress like Duran Duran. The music is awful, and the dialogue is awful. The script is so bad its difficult to imagine Barker had anything to do with it. At one point "our hero" is injected with the deadly transmutating drug, absolutely nothing happens to him, its simply not referred to again !. In playing down the horror element, and playing up the crime element, the producers missed an opportunity to produce a piece of contemporary horror, and instead produced a cheap looking Mockney version of Miami Vice. Most of the people involved leave this off their c.v.'s. I'd certainly leave it off your shopping list.

Horror -Science Fiction: Una de Zombis
Description:
This film is low budget, politically incorrect and makes fun of a lot of things nobody should laugh at. But, what the hell, that's what I love the early Kevin Smith's work. And Una de Zombis' filmmakers also want to give the best action and adventure fun that their budget can buy. You know what? They made it!

Horror -Science Fiction: The Vault of Horror
Description:
Directed by Roy Ward Baker 1973 Horror Everything that makes life worth leaving! Five men trapped in the basement vault of an office building share visions with each other of thier demise. Stories revolve around vampires, bodily dismemberment, east indian mysticism, an insurance scam, and an artist who kills by painting his victims' deaths. A great anthology film in the Amicus tradition. Five men find themselves going down an elevator into a huge roomlooking like a giant boardroom where they seem to be expected. Each one has afear that continually seems to plague him and they relate their fears to each other. The opening lacks the production values and Sir Ralph Richardson of its predecessor Tales From the Crypt as the crypt-keeper sorely, but the stories are all well-done with finesse from cast, crew, and the very able direction of an underappreciated Roy Ward Baker. The first story is about vampires in a small English town, and it is a very tasty vignette. The second story, starring Glynis Johns and Terry-Thomas both funny beyond belief, is the comedic relief of the film about a man who is too neat who needs to have that point hammered into his head by his wife. For him it is definitely a jarring experience. The third story is about a magician and his wife that kill to acquire a magic trick. Curt Jurgens is very good as the evil magician. A good story. The fourth story iseasily the weakest about a man buried alive for insurance. Lastly, the most literate of the stories concerns Dr. Who's Tom Baker seeking revenge on those that have profited on his artwork behind his back. He gets revenge through voodoo. All in all a great deal of fun. As previously stated, be sure to get the uncut version.
